THE TYSON FURY STORY
Early Life
Tyson Fury was born in Manchester, England in 1988. He was born into a Gypsy family with a long tradition of bare-knuckle prizefighting. Tyson Fury’s first successful comeback was related to the fact that he was born three months prematurely, only weighing 1 lb at birth. The doctors were betting against his survival from the get go. Yet, his father knew he was was a fighter at heart, and that he would pull through and survive the doctor’s ominous predictions.
In fact, his father decided to name his Tyson, after the heavyweight champion boxer at the time, Iron Mike Tyson, because of the fight he saw in his son. He knew his son was going to be a fighter in every sense of the word. His father even went so far as to tell the doctors that Tyson would grow to be seven feet tall and would become the heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
As fate would have it, Tyson pulled through and would eventually grow to tower over most of his peers. When Tyson Fury was just 10 years old, he started dabbling in the sport of boxing, then just a year later at the age of 11 he left school to help his father make money doing various labor intensive jobs. And at the age of 14, he would tower over almost all of his peers, already standing at 6’5″ tall.
Early Career
Tyson would eventually come to be known as a fearsome contender inside and outside of the ring. Outside of the ring, when all his friends, relatives, and family members were out having fun and getting drunk, Tyson would always be in the gym, improving his craft, and putting in the extra effort to strengthen his skills.
Inside of the ring, his shear size was enough to intimidate most fighters, but he was also fearsome in that he was quick and nimble in his movements. No doubt, always being the first one in the gym, and last one out, contributed to his eventual dominance in the sport.
As an amateur boxer he would go on to win Bronze in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships at the age of 18, and then he would eventually go on to win the ABA Super-heavyweight title just two years later.
In December of 2006 at the age of 20, standing 6’9″, Tyson would go pro. In that first fight he would dominate his first professional boxing opponent, garnering a TKO in the first round.
After a handful of additional professional boxing matches, Tyson Fury would eventually get his chance to win the British heavyweight title against John McDermott. After a win by points decision, Tyson would acquire the belt; however, he would have to face McDermott again due to controversy over the fight. But, Tyson Fury would go on to punish McDermott even more, to successfully defend his title.
Tyson would go on to win fight after fight, defending his title while collecting various other titles and champions belts along the way. He would eventually become the number challenger in the world and fight for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and the Lineal titles. His defeat of his childhood hero Wladimir Klitschko was a massive victory for Fury, which led to him becoming the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
After fighting and winning against two more opponents, Tyson Fury started to lose his fire.
The Ultimate Opponent
After winning it all, and making it to the top of the world as the best-of-the-best in the world of boxing, Tyson would meet his ultimate opponent. Despite his prowess within the ring, this new opponent wasn’t as easy to defeat as the one’s he grew accustomed to pummeling in the boxing ring.
Soon after his major victory against Klitschko, Tyson Fury would stop training, lose his focus, and fall into depression. At the same time, he also began partying, drinking, and doing drugs. He lost the will and motivation to fight. He gained weight, and his life began spiraling downward fast.
Unfortunately, Tyson Fury would also be stripped of his belts because of a rematch clause that he wasn’t able to fulfill against Klitschko due to his battle with mental health.
This mental opponent was stronger than any he had ever faced. This opponent was so strong, that Tyson let himself go in every sense of the word, blowing up to over 400 lbs. It got so bad for Tyson, that he would constantly think and speak of taking his own life.
Tyson would endure in this unbearable battle for over two and a half years.
The Comeback King
Of course it wasn’t until Tyson hit rock-bottom, that he finally decided enough was enough. One day, as he was near taking his own life, he heard a voice that encouraged him not to go through with it. At that moment, he decided to listen to his intuition, higher power, or whatever that voice was that he heard.
And as fate would have hit, he would soon learn of Deonte Wilder, an opponent worthy of his effort, but who doubted anyone could beat him. Tyson saw a glimmer of hope in the challenge.
Compelled by the challenge of a worthy opponent, Tyson decided to strive for the impossible. He committed to getting his life back in order and to getting back into fighting shape so he could prove to himself, and the world, that he was the greatest heavyweight boxing champion alive.
With only six months of training Tyson Fury would mount his comeback. He kicked all of his addictions, lost weight, and transformed himself back into boxing legend that he was born to be.
